We started White Coat Residences because the healthcare professionals keeping our hospital running deserve more than temporary housing that feels temporary.
I'm Susan, a retired physician who was born at Freeport Memorial Hospital. As a proud graduate of our high school, I happily claim the title of "Freeport Pretzel" (yes, that was our school mascot). I grew up here, and most of my family still lives here. Although I left at 17 for international adventures, I've kept my ties through family and friends.
A University of Illinois alum, I attended medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford and trained in Northwest Illinois before moving on across the country. My husband, Robert, is my newly retired engineer, and together we've supported tenants and managed properties for over twenty years. We founded this business together and support our silent investors as well.
The need for this business became clear to me when a family member was hospitalized at Freeport Hospital. Speaking with the locum hospitalist caring for them, I learned he was commuting from a hotel in Rockford, over 45 minutes each way, because there wasn't housing available closer to the hospital.
He told me plainly that the situation wasn't workable: trying to properly care for patients in Freeport while living out of a hotel that far away. I began to see the same pattern across other specialties.
A welcoming oasis, so they can be fully present for their patients without choosing between the people they care for and the people they love.
We're beginning with three distinctive homes in Freeport, with more already on the way as we expand to meet the needs of the locum and traveling healthcare community. Each home has its own personality, history, and character: a century-old Craftsman with a hidden garden, a house made for gathering, and a reimagined 1950s bungalow on a tree-lined double lot. What they share is thoughtful furnishings, comfortable extended-stay living, and central locations just minutes from the hospital, restaurants, shopping, parks, schools, and the heart of Freeport.
Every home keeps the craftsmanship and charm of its original design, paired with the conveniences of modern living.
Families, pets, and shared assignments are welcome. Fenced yards, private gardens, and space to spread out.
Minutes from the hospital, and walking distance to the International Baccalaureate middle school, with the high school and elementary schools soon to follow.
Throughout this site, we use "healthcare professionals" to mean the physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and travel nurses who come to care for our community.
